ABOUT US

Marcell Engelbert and his brother in law James Edwin Smart were both trained under Stephen Boudin of Jansen in Paris, the finest designer of the twentieth century. In 1958 The Engelbert Decorating Company was established.

Its primary role was the restoration and decoration of stately homes in the UK as well as abroad. After spending an apprenticeship of almost twenty years under his father and a further nine years with James (learning special effects, gilding, graining, marbling and a wide range of paper hanging and restoration of papers) John has re-established the family firm in the UK.

Some of the restoration and decoration of the houses credited to the family are; Absley House, Blenheim Palace, Syon House, Critchal, Clandon, The Royal Albert Hall, Leeds Castle and some apartments belonging to members of the royal family in Kensington Palace.

As well as working for established buildings, the family firm also undertakes work for private clients and property management agencies.

LASTEST PROJECTS

Recently I have worked on a number of projects covering local areas such as Chiswick, Hammersmith, Richmond, Kew and Chelsea and West Minster.

I have noticed that there is a great demand for material or specialist papers. Such as silver or gold leaf. Throughout my career, I have hung a number of diverse papers but recently I have been asked to hang ostrich skin effect paper. Certainly, the quality of the paper is moving back to the original basis when decoration was a fine art.

If correctly done, even a cupboard can be concealed with paper regardless of the paper type. Please see the red room.

I am privileged in the fact that I have been apprentice trained by the best. But naturally, wall paper hanging is not my only skill. As you can see from the photographs in my portfolio that I had a few signage and gilding projects in the past year.
